Mark grew up in Oldham , Greater Manchester . Mark was very interested in playing "football" as a kid. After he finished school he started working on a clothing store , then a local bank. While working he tried out for Hudderfield Town, a Manchester United football club. He was injured so he never made the team.

He began to look at different options in his carreer and that is when he answered Nigerl Martin- Smith's ad for a pop band. Mark joined Gary, Howard, Jason and Robbie and the rest was history.

After TT split in 1996 , Mark began his solo carreer. He released his first single "Child" in 1996 which made it to #3. The corresponding album "Green Man" was released in 1997 which spawed not also "Child" but the single "Clementine" which also reached #3 in the UK Charts and "I am what I am" . Mark was dropped by BMG record label in 1997.

In 2002 Mark became part of UK's "Celebrity Big Brother". He won that competition. Mark was signed to Island/Universal in 2002 and began working on his second solo album " In your own time " in 2003 which spawned the singles "four minute warning" which reached #4 on the UK charts and "Alone without you", which reached #26 on the UK charts. Mark was again dropped by his record label.

In 2004 mark started his own record label 'Sedna Records". He releaed a new album "How the mighty fall" in 2005 which spawned 2 singles "Making out" and "Hail Mary".

Mark has co-written the theme song to the 2008 movie "Over her dead body"

He joined the reformed Take That in 2005 and took part of the documentary and the corresponding reunion tour. He is still currently in Take That

On a personal level, Mark became a dad in July 2006 with fiancee Emma Ferguson . Their son's name is Elwood. Emma and Mark gave birth to a daughter in Nov 2008. Mark said "I do" to fiance Emma on Nov 9th 2009 in Scotland
